Maria Luna Ivar

Community Mental Health Worker

Maria grew up in Durham, NC and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Psychology. Growing up, she was always attracted to the idea of helping people and explored that in different ways in college. During her time at UNC-Chapel Hill, she participated in different internships relating to education and accessibility. While she was with a local non-profit, who was working toward extending anti-racist education, she noticed the need for conversations relating to mental health in Latinx youth. In addition, as she was navigating conversations about her own well-being and that of loved ones around her, she noticed how important it was to create spaces where people felt comfortable to address issues they may be facing. When looking for where to continue her professional journey she came across El Futuro and recognized how valuable of an asset it was to our community. She’s grateful and excited for the opportunity El Futuro has given her to serve the community that she grew up in! Later in life, she hopes to continue her educational career by pursuing a Master’s in social work or mental health counseling.
