Maiya Garrett-Peters 

Community Mental Health Educator, MSW 

Maiya is a Durham, NC native who received her bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in Latin American Studies. After serving as an Americorps member at El Futuro, she returned to the organization after obtaining her Master of Social Work from UNC Chapel Hill. She is passionate about community mental health and about making mental health education accessible to the Latino community in North Carolina. While studying for her MSW, Maiya worked closely with children, adolescents, and families. Maiya has volunteered and lived in countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean including Peru, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. In her free time, Maiya enjoys caring for her plants, going for walks in nature, spending time with family, friends, and animals, and cooking delicious vegan food.
